Instructions Following
Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing therapy includes removing tartar (calculus) and bacterial plaque from the root surface above and below the gum line.  This helps reduce inflammation and infection and reduces the depth of periodontal pockets, therefore allowing more efficient flossing and brushing to maintain healthy gums.

  1. For the first few days you may experience some cold and heat sensitivity. Please temporarily avoid foods or drinks that cause tooth sensitivity to allow the teeth to heal undisturbed.
  2. Do not eat, drink, chew or consume hot foods or beverages until the numbness has worn off following anesthesia.  When anesthesia wears off, you may experience slight discomfort, readily controlled with Ibuprofen or Tylenol according to the instructions on the label or those provided by your doctor as needed.
  3. Small amounts of blood may discolor your saliva during the first 24 hours. This is normal. Do not rinse vigorously, spit, suck on straws, smoke or drink alcohol during the first 48-72 hours. Also, avoid physical exertion the following week, especially during the first 2 days, since this will increase blood pressure and may cause more bleeding from the surgical site. If you experience excessive bleeding please call our office.
  4. A warm salt water rinse, approximately one teaspoon in one cup of water, three times a day can be helpful for faster healing.
  5. Brush and floss gently as instructed following scaling and root planing, resuming normal brushing and flossing when the soreness is gone.
  6. If you are prescribed any antibiotics, please take them as instructed until completely finished. If you are currently taking oral contraceptive medication, please beware that any antibiotics taken can interfere with the birth control for one full cycle. Also, you can take over the counter Probiotics while you are on antibiotics.

Follow any other instructions provided by our office on your visit.  Call our office if you experience extreme pain, bleeding or swelling, or if you have any further questions.
